A Day at Waimanalo Country Farms
Oahu isn’t all about high-rises and pristine beaches. Tucked away in the lush windward side of Oahu lies Waimanalo Country Farms, a 52 acre working farm that offers visitors some family fun and a stunning view. Set against the scenic Koʻolau Mountains, this family-run farm offers a guests a classic fall county-farm experience, connecting visitors to the land and the local spirit.
This is the home of the iconic sunflower field Instagram selfie and it’s worth a visit just to have your own version of this classic photo, but families will enjoy a good time as well strolling though the flowers and pumpkins (if you go well before the end of October), sipping on fresh lemonade, feeding farm animals in the petting zoo or simply sitting back to enjoy the breathtaking natural beauty of Waimanalo.
This is a fun place to take young kids to celebrate the fall season and the farm stand offers fresh squeezed lemonade & ice tea, a variety of corn-based snacks (apparently grown on the farm), fresh sunflowers, and a few trinkets. They have photo-opps set up around the grounds and limited shaded seating. The petting zoo features alpacas, goats, pigs, ducks, turkeys, and tortoises. You can feed them too (for an additional fee).
If you decide to do the hayride be prepared for a Sunday school lesson, bible quotes included. This activity should be labeled as a hayride for Jesus… our guide spent 15 of the 20 minute tour making a born-again sermon, I can appreciate the gratitude but it was too much. Tell us about the plants, the history of the place, and leave the sermons for church.
For the entrance fee, expect to pay somewhere between $6 – $15 depending on what day of the week you visit and whether you’re a tourist or a local (bring your ID). There’s ample parking unless you’re coming for one of their special “Rustic Nights” events. All in all, it’s a nice place to enjoy one of the best views in Waimanalo and give the kids space to run around and experience some fun farm vibes. On an over-populated island such as Oahu it’s a welcome opportunity to enjoy some quiet country spaces and support a family farm that’s been operating since 1948.
