Teruya’s Japanese Restaurant is a hidden gem in the Makiki neighborhood of Honolulu. It’s been serving up delicious Japanese cuisine since 1987, and it’s a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike. The family-owned restaurant is now run by the next generation focused on traditional favorites like bentos, adagi, and mochi.

The restaurant is located on Pensacola Street, in a small, unassuming building. But don’t let the exterior fool you, the food inside is anything but ordinary. Food is made fresh daily and sold via a concession stand venue so everything is fast & ready to go. Just walk-up, choose your lunch (and dessert) and go. The owner Masaki is almost always there ringing up orders with his down to earth attitude and friendly smile. While he takes your order you can watch the ladies in back continuously making fresh rolls – but be sure to get there early in the day to ensure they don’t sell out of favorite items!

The menu at Teruya’s is extensive, and it features a wide variety of Japanese dishes. There are something for everyone, like kaaragi, musubis, teriyaki chicken, shrimp tempura rolls, donburi and vegetarian options. Bentos include favorite entrees along with a delicious sampling of Japanese appetizers. The prices are reasonable and the food is always tasty. If you’d like to share the love with your office or family event they can do large catering orders if you give them at least 72hrs advance notice

If you’re looking for a delicious and authentic Japanese meal, then Teruya’s Japanese Restaurant is the place for you. The food is excellent, the service is great, and the food is perfect to grab for lunch at the office or the park. Limited street parking in front or park across the street at the Beretania Walgreen’s and walk over.
