The trail up to the Makapu’u Lighthouse offers spreading ocean vistas and stunning views of Oahu’s southeastern shoreline.

The trail up to Makapu’u Lighthouse is a well-known hike frequented by locals and tourists alike.  Paved from top to bottom it provides an easy going 2mile trek up to a scenic overlook of Waimanalo and the windward coast of Oahu.  This is a great hike to do with strollers, kids, dogs, and (healthy) elders.  It’s also a great work-out for runners/athletes who want a quick up & down exercise.  Yet for all it’s beauty most people make one big mistake when embarking on this trail… timing.  They go too late in the hottest part of the day, which makes this otherwise amazing excursion a sweltering chore in the sun, uphill, with no shade.

Makapu’u Lighthouse is located on the eastern section of the island within the Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline district, a perfect place for sunrises.  Now I’ll let you in on a little secret, you can also view amazing sunsets from the half-way mark.  As you proceed up the first half of the trail you’re treated to a gorgeous view of Oahu’s south shore where you can watch the sunset over Kokohead Crater and the shores of Hawaii Kai.  As you continue upwards toward the summit you transition into spreading ocean views where you can see all the way to Moloka’i and Lana’i beyond on clear days. This is a hotspot for whale watching between November – May as humpbacks love to frolic in the channel between Oahu and Moloka’i.

My ideal way to do this hike is on the full moon or day after.  Arrive an hour before sundown to catch a killer sunset on your way up and then relax at the top to watch the full-moon rise over the ocean.  Then it’s all downhill from there by the light of the moon… can’t get much better than that unless… you accidentally discover a discreet bottle of wine or joint in your bag.

Lastly, let me just warn you that signage in the parking lot states the park is closed from 6:30pm – 7am. So, if you plan to stay late or arrive early you’ll need to park alongside the Kalanianaole Hwy and walk a little farther.   There are no bathrooms, no water, and no trash cans so you’ll need to take care of business beforehand and pack out anything you pack in.  The Makapu’u Lighthouse trail is hands down one of my favorite excursions to share with visiting guests or a good girlfriend.
