Honolulu Museum of Art School Gives Kids Full-Circle Art Experience
Looking to grow the talents of your budding artist? Whether you have a prolific talent already or would just like to increase the right-side of your childrens’ brain development the Honolulu Museum of Art School is an excellent place to feed their creativity. For over 90 years the Museum school (formerly known as the Honolulu Academy of Arts) has been feeding artistic souls on Oahu offering classes and tours since 1927.
They offer a variety of art classes to choose from such as; classic drawing & painting, 3-dimensional arts like ceramics and sculpture, jewelry making, cartooning, and more. Classes are held throughout each year for 3 month sessions with special workshops over school breaks. Prices are reasonable and materials are included, but if finances are tight you can inquire about scholarships that are available to help cover tuition costs on a limited basis.
At the close of each class series the school hosts an art exhibition event providing students with a unique chance to experience the full circle process of creating and exhibiting their work. It’s a moment of immense pride as students celebrate their achievements with familes and friends in a bonafide art gallery. This is a valuable opportunity for young artists to develop character as they face the fears, anticipation, and excitement every artist experiences putting themselves in the public eye to share and explain their work. The exhibition is conducted with a mix of both casual and dressed-up style typical of local events in Honolulu. Pupus, live music, leis, and a flurry of activity fill the normally quiet halls of the museum school for the two hour event, and the artwork hangs for an additional week before families are invited to collect their work to take home.
Now, don’t forget that classes aren’t only limited to children. There are many adult classes as well and regular gallery events in addition to the main museum exhibitions. Another notable feature is the figure drawing group made up of professional and amatuer artists that meets every Monday night from 7pm – 9:30pm. It’s a great evening to exercise your artistic skills featuring a live model, friendly people, good music, and is open to the public for a $10 fee.
