Get a Bird’s Eye View of Waikiki

Diamond Head’s iconic peak is the most recognizable landmark of Honolulu visible from anywhere on Waikiki Beach. From a bird’s eye view, you can see it’s actually a huge volcanic crater that remains from Hawaii’s ancient beginnings.

If you’re looking for an accessible hike with amazing views you’ll get both by traversing the rim of Diamond Head Crater. For some, this trail can seem a bit challenging as the journey is an all uphill switchback climb to the top. However, the trail is mostly paved without any obstacles along the way and is suitable for adults of all ages and children.

On average, it will only take you around 40 to 60 minutes to reach the 760-foot summit including walking through a tunnel and a steep climb up stairs For those who prefer to move at a slower pace, there are benches along the trail to rest and catch your breath.  Hard work will pay off when you reach the summit and take in the panoramic perspective of land, mountains, and sea. On clear days, the islands of Mau’i and Moloka’i are visible on the ocean horizon.

History buffs will enjoy imagining soldiers scanning the horizon for enemy planes from the WWII military bunkers that sit atop the crater when it served as a military base.  Remnants of the concrete dugouts remain, a nostalgic part of the experience, as hikers emerge from the mouth of the bunkers to their first glimpse of the breathtaking view.

A few words to the wise, this is a very popular hike that attracts a lot of people every day.  Go in the early morning to avoid the largest crowds and the heat of the day.  Food is available for purchase inside the crater or you can pack a lunch and enjoy a picnic in the grassy fields adjoining the parking lot.  As always, be sure to bring your camera and water!
