Oahu Valley of the Temples

Oahu is home to one of the most peaceful sites you can visit. The temple that stands here is a replica of the Byodo-in temple built in Uji Japan over 950 years ago. Both the temple and its garden were formally dedicated in 1960 to honor the 100-year anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants that came to Hawaii from Japan. The temple in Uji has been declared a national treasure by the government of Japan which makes this replica a fitting tribute to the Japanese people of Hawaii.

As soon as you enter the gardens, you can hear the calming sound of the great bell that hangs near the temple. This massive bell is over six feet high and weighs over seven tons. This is also a replica bell resembling the same bell hanging in the Byodo-in temple. That bell is one of the three most famous bells in Japan. Guests are urged to ring this bell using the soft wooden log called shumoku before entering the temple. It is thought to clear one’s head of all negativity, imparts deep peace, and brings happiness, blessings, and a long life.

Near the temple, there is also a meditation pavilion where you can go to meditate or simply enjoy the feeling of being surrounded by nature.

Inside of the temple is home to an impressive two ton amida statue (the Buddha of the western paradise). The amida Buddha represents the infinite life and light surrounding all beings. Here guests must remove their shoes and are invited to light incense and perhaps offer up a prayer.

The beauty of the temple isn’t the only draw. The temple grounds are also teaming with wildlife. Wherever you look there’s something to see. From the turtles and Koi in the ponds, you can also see black swans cruising the waters. You’ll also find temple cats and birds that will eat out of your hand. At the temple gift shop, you can purchase koi food to feed the fish who are always excited to be fed.

But I’ll let the temple’s beauty speak for itself. If you want to see a beautiful side of the islands, I highly recommend a trip to the Valley of the Temples. It will leave you with beautiful Kaneohe landscapes and a sense of peace in your heart.
