Perched on the shores of the Diamond Head/Kahala district of Honolulu, the Shangri-La Museum stands as a beacon of cultural exploration and artistic expression. This unique museum offers visitors a journey into the world of Islamic art and design, making it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to broaden their cultural horizons.

A Glimpse into the Origins of Shangri La

The story of Shangri La began in 1935, when Doris Duke, an American heiress and philanthropist, visited the Middle East and South Asia during her honeymoon. She fell in love with the region’s art, architecture, and intricate design, sparking a lifelong passion. Duke envisioned creating a residence that celebrated Islamic art and culture, and with that vision in mind, she began collecting art pieces from her travels, from Morocco to Iran to India. Over the next several decades, Duke expanded her collection and continued to refine her estate, which became her Honolulu home and, ultimately, a treasure trove of Islamic art and artifacts.
