Cozy Vibes, But the Flavors Fell Flat at The Sister Restaurant & Cafe

Cozy Vibes, But the Flavors Fell Flat at The Sister Restaurant & Cafe

Thai food being one of our favorites, we really wanted to like The Sister Restaurant & Cafe, the space is warm and welcoming with outdoor seating, and we appreciate that they’re open late, which is rare in Honolulu! The atmosphere feels comfortable, homey, and features outdoor seating (also rare in Honolulu unfortunately) making it a nice place to unwind. You can pay a corking fee and bring in your own (adult) drinks, which is nice.

Unfortunately, the food didn’t live up to the inviting setting or the prices. The spring rolls tasted like something reheated from frozen, lacking any real flavor or freshness. The pork special was also disappointing and felt like a barely warm left-over from the day before: chewy, dry, and served on a bed of plain shredded cabbage that only emphasized how little seasoning or care went into the dish.

We’re tempted to return to try the breakfast menu as they have tantalizing photos of waffles, smoked-salmon, and eggs Benedict… However, for the prices they charge, we’re not convinced yet that we want to take the chance. We like their concept and setting, but for Honolulu Thai food, we expected much better quality and attention to detail. With a few adjustments in freshness, flavor, and presentation, The Sister could easily match the warmth of its ambiance—but for now, it’s all comfort on the outside, and not enough satisfaction on the plate.
